Gender Justice
What is Gender Justice?

Gender Justice is a critical approach within activism, philanthropy and social justice organising, amongst other spaces. It seeks to challenge the ways that gender identities, as well as perceived and/or assumed genders, affect people’s and groups’ lived experiences. Gender just approaches are inherently intersectional, meaning they are anti-racist, and challenge class, national and ethnic privilege, amongst others.
Gender Justice Initiative and EDGE Conference
In 2016, the Gender Justice Initiative was officially launched during the EDGE Conference. The initiative is comprised of a core group of leaders from feminist, women’s rights, and progressive philanthropic institutions working across varying areas of practice, grantmaking models and geographic regions.

This year, participants of the initiative will be coming together in Barcelona to promote awareness of, and consider responses to, gender justice in this space, as it is of central relevance to the conference. Gender simply can’t be reduced to a specific issue that only ‘gender work’ addresses; gender justice is at the heart of systems change and of advancing justice.

It is important to consider how a fundamental intersectional concern for women's rights and gender justice impacts and informs our responses to the core conference questions.

The lab leaders will make sure to include the following questions into the planning of the sessions, but all participants should have it in mind:

-
What is currently being done to address the need for a gender just approach to the issues raised in this session? What discussions or strategies are taking place?
-
What are the gaps, or what more needs to be done? What are the tensions or issues at stake when including this perspective?
-
3. What is the contribution of feminism and gender justice to this systemic change model? How are feminist organisations contributing to the issues being raised?
Feminism and women’s movements have been contributing for over three centuries to transformation. There will be no Just Transition without women and gender justice.
